How Do I Get A REAL ID?
Need a REAL ID? Take a simple quiz to help you decide when to apply.
Gather any forms of identification you may have before you start. The quiz will ask the year your current identification expires. Examples of identification include a passport, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Traveler Card, Permanent Resident Card, or state-issued driver license or identification card. If you do not have any current federal or state identification, you can still take the quiz to find out when to get a REAL ID.
If you find you DO need a REAL ID, there are a few things you can do ahead of time.
Fill out the online application
Filling out the online application will save time during your DMV visit.
Gather your documents
Use DMV’s interactive REAL ID document checklist to gather all of the documentation you will need to bring to DMV to apply for your REAL ID.
Visit a DMV office
DMV expects a very high demand for REAL IDs between now and 2020. Fortunately, DMV wait times are currently down across the state. While it’s still possible to make an appointment, it’s not necessary for getting a REAL ID. In fact, those without a REAL ID should come in as soon as possible to get their REAL ID before wait times go up closer to the October 2020 deadline. Check business hours and wait times at offices near you to help plan your visit. Many offices are even open on Saturdays for your convenience!
Appointment times are only able to be scheduled up to three months in advance and tend to fill up quickly. Example: If you are trying to schedule an appointment for December 5, 2019, appointment times will open on September 5, 2019.
