How Do I Get A REAL ID?

Step 1

Fill out the online application

Filling out the online application will save time during your DMV visit.

Step 2

Gather your documents

Use DMV’s interactive REAL ID document checklist to gather all of the documentation you will need to bring to DMV to apply for your REAL ID.

Step 3

Visit a DMV office

Currently, DMV is only serving customers with an appointment. If you do not have an appointment and your license is expiring soon, the DMV recommends that you renew your license online (if eligible) and apply for a REAL ID at a later date when field offices have the capacity to serve more customers. If an office visit is required to renew your license, please check back in the coming weeks for future availability.

DMV has asked California law enforcement to exercise discretion before issuing citations for driving with a recently expired license. This action only covers Californians whose driver license expiration dates fall between March 16 and May 15, 2020, AND who are required to visit a field office to renew. These customers can now delay their required visit during this 60-day period.
