How Do I Get A REAL ID?
Fill out the online application
Filling out the online application will save time during your DMV visit.
Gather your documents
Use DMV’s interactive REAL ID document checklist to gather all of the documentation you will need to bring to DMV to apply for your REAL ID.
Visit a DMV office
Select DMV offices are open to the public as of May 8, 2020, to assist customers with existing appointments and with transactions that require an in-person visit. Californians who do not have an urgent need to go to a DMV field office should delay their visit, including those interested in applying for a REAL ID. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has announced that the REAL ID enforcement date is extended to October 1, 2021, and customers who want a REAL ID will have an opportunity to apply at a later date.
Note: DMV has extended all driver licenses that expire between March and May 2020 and has expanded eligibility to renew online.
